Cardinalfish - Pterapogon

Pterapogon kauderni   Pterapogon kauderni

The cardinal fish Pterapogon kauderni is one of the tragic figures in keeping marine fish. Discovered relatively late it quickly raised a high demand which did lead to over fishing in its natural habitat. This is a shame as this fish is probably the easiest marine ornamental fish to breed! The male keeps eggs and fry up to 30 days in his mouth and releases big babies which are no challenge to raise with newly hatched brine shrimps. The picture shows babies which will be set free any minute. The only culprit is the mal itself as he will eat his fry if not separated from them as soon as possible. We keep 6 couples and all reproduce well.
